CDC Z-CANPR PROGRAM AND ALDP.ORG WEBSITE

Challenge

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) responded to the Zika Emergency Response crisis by developing resources for its at-risk population, women of child-bearing age living in states with Zika incident cases. The CDC identified a need to build an informational website to publish the location of clinics and contraceptive resources for at-risk women.

Solution

I led the UX and development teams through the creation and development of high-quality emergency response websites for the CDC. These websites provided educational information about contraception choices and the location of clinics providing free contraception for women of childbearing age within the Zika Contraception Access Network (Z-CAN) in Puerto Rico during a potentially devastating public health crisis.

Result

Successfully created and launched an emergency response website for the Zika crisis to educate and inform on contraceptive options and clinic locations for women of childbearing age in Puerto Rico. Through partnership and collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders, Z-CAN reduced barriers to contraception as part of the public health response to the Zika virus outbreak and expanded the capacity of Puerto Rico’s healthcare system to integrate same-day access to contraceptive services into routine clinical practice.

YOUR TEXAS BENEFITS

Challenge

Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a state agency that oversees the administration of social services programs such as food benefits, cash assistance, and medical coverage for the most vulnerable Texan population. The agency employs over 8,000 individuals working across the state to determine eligibility and make sure that citizens are served in the most efficient manner.

HHSC developed a strong self-service strategy with the primary goal of increasing self-sufficiency among citizens and improving workload efficiency through automation. HHSC initially developed a self-service application, YourTexasBenefits.com (YTB), to allow Texans to submit their applications online. YTB was enhanced with additional capabilities to allow citizens to report changes, renew their benefits, and upload documents.

Solution

Your Texas Benefits app allows people to use cell phones to send paycheck stubs and other documents to HHSC. For this effort, I led the UX design team through a User-Centered Design (UCD) approach for creating native mobile IOS and Android applications for document upload, case views, and notification management for benefits recipients in the State of Texas. Conducted the ideation and workshops with the client to identify the target audience and map out their journey while generating initial high-level design ideas and eliciting additional requirements as part of the research phase. Led and guided the development of the information architecture, testing, and design of wireframes and prototypes, and collaboration with the visual design and development team to ensure an optimal experience for the end user.

Result

Texas HHSC team overhauled the entire look and feel of YTB, down to the most basic patterns that govern user interface interactions. Not only has this helped citizens feel more comfortable using self-service options, but it has also changed the types of interactions that are most commonly performed by eligibility workers and call center staff. Citizens are submitting higher-quality applications with improved data inclusion and document submissions. This means that workers will spend less time inquiring about missing information and manually entering data themselves. It increases processing efficiency for workers and lowers eligibility determination costs for HHSC.

This app transformed how documents are submitted and the speed of benefits notifications. The app has been used to submit over 20M documents to HHSC.
